Abstract : The concept of "financial engeneering" is as old as the financial transactions; however, it seems a relatively recent term, in view of its specialization. Most definitions of financial engeneering are those given by researchers who develop models and theories or design financial products for the conventional financial institutions. If this concept needs to be well defined academically, then its Islamic counterpart equally needs to be properly defined. This paper is an attempt to identify Islamic financial engeneering, defining its concept and everything related to it, starting from its characteristics, passing by its importance and usefulness and ending by its foundations. The paper also presents the most important financial products engineered up to now by some Islamic financial institutions.
