A
Brief Account of the Wednesday Seminar
Among the deeply-rooted traditions of the Institute is the
Wednesday Seminar, which takes place on Wednesday every
week. It lasts for one and a half hour, where half of this
period is allocated for presenting the subject of the
Seminar, the other half for discussions and interventions.
The Seminar could be conducted internally at the level of
staff researchers of the Institute, or at the external
level, where teaching staff from the College of Economics,
or other colleges, such as the College of Arts, Department
of Islamic Studies and Department of Sociology are invited
to participate. The Seminar at the external level could also
be attended by teaching staff of other Saudi universities or
institutions.
Among the benefits of this Seminar is that it is held weekly
for academic and not for administrative purposes. This
strengthens the relationship among the participants, storms
their brains and stimulates them to commence an academic
research, follow up on an already existing one, search for a
solution for one of the problems associated with such
research or take stock of, present and evaluate new
literature on the subject of the Seminar.
The subjects dealt with in the Seminar are limited to issues
associated with Islamic Economics and Fiqh-ul-Mu’amalat
(Jurisprudence of Islamic Financial Transactions). The
issues raised vary with the participating departments, such
as the Department of Economics, Department of Management,
Accountancy Department, Systems Department, Islamic Studies
Department, Sociology Department, etc.
