Sustainable Development In the Light of
Maqasid Al Shari’ah

Abstract. Sustainable Development is a new term in the contemporary literatures. It was Known on 1987 by an International Committee established by the United Nations to study the issues of Development and Environment. It concentrates on three dimensions: the Economic Development, the Social Development and the Environmental Protection. Sustainable Development aims at providing development to the current generation, in the same time maintaining the ability of the new generations to achieve the same.
Maqasid Al Shari’ah achieve protection to Islamic Religion, Self, Mind, Breed and Pelf to be safe in our life and extend protection to the hereafter, While the ideal target of sustainable development does not exceed our life, It means that Maqasid Al Shari’ah help more to realize the Sustainable Development. To exemplify that, we may go through the difficulties facing the applications of the Sustainable Development in our life and compare them to what Maqasid Al Shari’ah may provide in this concern.
The main results of the study are as follow:
1- The Sustainable Development is considered an ideal idea and comply with the goals of the Islamic Shari’ah as it aims at achieving the benefits of the human being during the current time and in the future.
2- The application does not achieve the idea of the Sustainable Development due to human mistakes particularly from the developed counties who do not respect their commitments.
3- There are other factors affecting the Sustainable Development (other than Economic, Social and environmental issues) such as: the Human development, the Technology and the Justice which should be taken into consideration.
4- The Human behavior should be modified to comply with the requirements of the Sustainable Development if we are going to achieve the Sustainable Development successfully.
If the Sustainable Development is being applied through Maqasid Al Shari’ah, either by Muslims or non-Muslims, the results will be better.
