Abstract : Computers have changed the way people work and continue to change it. They have given rise to new hierarchies among people and new ways to exert power: the designer has power over the user; a local computer expert has power over his colleagues, because of his knowledge. Computers provided better communications for some and insulated others. Many of the effects had never been planned and are now being studied as phenomena that have already happened. The results may be used to predict the impact of new machines and new programs. This may lead to recommendations about the role a particular program should assume. Since the role of a program is largely determined by the way it looks on the outside, i.e., the User Interface, this paper stresses on the principles for user interface design.
