This study aims at analyzing the effects of the Israeli seige on the size and
rate of umemployment as well as the structure of the umemploymed in the Palestinian
territories. The study is based on the labour surveys carried out by Palestinian Central
Bureau of Statistics and particularly on the results of labour of survey (July- September,
2000) round,and (October-Dismember, 2000 round January–March 2001) round, in
addition to the survey of the impact of the Israeli measures on the Palestinian?labour
market (March 2001) In order to describe and analyze the relevant data, the study
combined both the descriptive and analytic approaches, The comparative approach was
used as well to draw comparisons among the different periods under study .
The data, in this study, indicated noticeable changes in the size and rate of
unemployment, as well as in the structure of the unemployed persons in the Palestinian
territories caused by the Israeli seige. Obviously, the unemployment rate multiplied and
the size of Palestinian labour force in Israel and settlements decreased considerably. The
Israeli labour market , which was one ofthe main sources of absorbing unemployment in
the Palestinian territories, has become, after the seige, the main cause of this
unemployment.
Moreover, the study revealed more details about the characters of the unemployed
persons. Most of them are young, wage employee, manual workers mainly within the
Israeli building sector and low- educated though, there are some perceivable differences
between males and females in this respect. |
