Abstract : Shrimp aquaculture industry in the Kingdom is growing rapidly and providing opportunity for economic and social upliftment of rural communities. After the hit of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) infection in 2012 along the coastal areas, new culture strategies are being framed to develop innovative technologies for the production of quality shrimp. In this perspective, a study was carried out to develop suitable culture technique for the production of pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Boon 1891). The thesis highlights the importance of latest concepts and methodology followed for the conduct of experiments. The results generated from the study are discussed with recent and significant literature available in the field. Four experiments were conducted with a view to optimize survival, growth and production of shrimp in HDPE liner ponds at KAU Fish Farm, Faculty of Marine Sciences, Obhur. A study conducted to test the efficiency of green water (fish pond water) on shrimp health shows that it not only improves health and immunity of shrimp, but also enhances survival and growth. Middle East and North African (MENA) region are known for high levels of solar UV-B radiation and considered it as a reason for high level carotenoid deposition and high degree of stress in cultured shrimp. Result of a study conducted shows that UV-B radiation does not influence significantly (p>0.01) on growth, melanosis and production of shrimp. The use of artificial substrates is a management strategy employed to increase pond surface area and thereby enhance growth efficiency of shrimp. Study result shows that artificial substrates in culture pond would improve water quality, survival and shrimp production. In shrimp culture operations, the devices (aerators) used for aeration consume more power and increases cost of production. A study conducted to optimize pond aeration shows that 1hp could produce an average 422±10.2kg shrimp (treatment) with the use of a submersible aspirator aerator (Force-7 model), which is 88.4% higher than that of the 224±12.4 kg biomass production in control ponds. The outcome of this research has great significance in the field of commercial shrimp aquaculture industry and the results can be used as a guideline for the culture of L. vannamei in semi-arid lands of the Kingdom.
