Abstract : Municipal solid wastes are considered one of the issues from which the whole world is suffering. Such a problem is associated with urban development, expansion, overpopulation, and squandering of resources which applies to the governorate of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In fact, the problem of municipal solid wastes is clearly demonstrated because of its increasing quantities and ineffective and improper recycle of such solid wastes without affecting the environment negatively. Neither there are any effective methods to take benefit of such solid wastes. Population and some inhabitants of the city of Jeddah are suffering from the eyesore of wastes in districts, streets, and public gardens – especially in rush hours and vacations. Unfortunately, a number of unqualified companies and firms working in the field of wastes have been contracted by the general directorate. This study aims to analyze the reality and methods currently followed to collect, transfer and process municipal solid wastes in the governorate of Jeddah, to recognize the contributions of public and private sectors in waste management; and further propose an integrated system to manage such wastes. To this aim, the study has chosen the municipal solid wastes in the city of Jeddah to be a topic for research. Additionally, two methods have been used to collect data and information: a questionnaire, and interviews conducted with members of the sample group. The sample group is composed of staff in the General Directorate of Cleaning and Landfills, inhabitants of the city of Jeddah (housewives), and store proprietors. The study concluded that the waste recycling is considered the best method to process such wastes, the lack of environmental awareness among population triggers an increase in its quantities and improper disposal methods of it. Moreover, the study concluded that. Department of Solid Wastes Management in the governorate of Jeddah lacks proper planning, organization and coordination with the private sector. Finally, the study has recommended that the current methods of waste disposal be replaced with other effective and efficient methods in terms of quality and quantity. It further recommended the necessity for source-based assortment of wastes; strict supervision and continuous follow-up by the General Directorate over the private sector; and implementation of the proposed integrated system to manage solid wastes in the governorate of Jeddah.
