Abstract : Recruiting teacher assistant is the first step towards preparing a candidate to be a faculty member in the related academic department. Therefore the process of selecting teacher assistant in universities is of vital importance. Both of the criteria and the procedures of selecting teacher assistant must be designed in such a way to minimize subjectivity and maximize objectivity. This target is complicated when the number of candidates is much larger than the vacancies. Then efficiency and effectiveness of traditional procedures become questionable. This dissertation is addressing the problem of selecting best candidates for teacher assistant positions among large number of applicants. The Analytic Hierarchy Process is implemented to design a quantitative model to rank the applicants according to set of criteria that their weights are agreed upon by the recruiting committee in a very systematic and transparent way. Those criteria could be classified into two kinds: Quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative criteria include academic knowledge (GPA), work experience, aptitude test, graduate university, and English language. The other kind includes teaching skills, research skills, psychometric test, and extra-curricular activities. With regard to the priorities of those criteria, they have been specified by a number of well-experienced faculties from different Saudi universities. Based on AHP, the given priorities could be summarized as follows: Teaching skills 19% priority, research skills 15%, major GPA 14%, kind of work experience and higher education 9%, aptitude and psychometric test 7%, general GPA 6%, and graduate university 5%. The designed model is promising and effective in providing objectivity to the selecting process. It is hoped that the faculty of Economics and Administration at KAAU will adopt the model that can be generalized and used by other faculties and other universities as well.
