Abstract : In case of the helicopter makes maneuvering, centripetal forces acting on the helicopter may pull fuel away from the fuel lines. This un-porting of fuel can cause fuel starvation and engine stoppage. To overcome this problem the reserve ferry fuel tank can be developed as pressurized tank and the transfer line allows fuel flow depending on pressure difference, instead of gravity. This tank contains an elastic barrier between the fuel and gas. The compressibility of a gas (nitrogen) is utilized in pneumatic system for storing fuel and then providing this fuel to the engine system when required. Due to great properties and advantages, composite materials are used in many applications in advance and accurate industries such as aerospace and fuel tank structures design therefore, the material used for this tank design is graphite fibers in an epoxy matrix. The tank can be fabricated by using filament winding process and it is designed by arranging the layers and fiber angle orientations in each ply, the best arrangement can be achieved in whole layup in order to strengthen the stability of laminated composite and reduce the materials used and finally have a best design. When building a pressurized fuel tank out of composite materials, some the theories employed to optimize strength and predict failure are the maximum strain theory and Hashin failure criteria. Abaqus® is used to predict the mechanical behavior of the pressure cylindrical fuel tank by finite element analysis. For this tank design it is very important to ensure safety in the case of helicopter accidents. Therefore it is necessary to use crash tests and computer analyses during design development to estimate the safety performance. This study demonstrates the accuracy and effectiveness of finite element simulation of crash test on composite cylinder fuel tank with Abaqus® and predicting good simulation results.
