Abstract : This is the final report of a two years project. The research team was notified that the project is accepted for funding by the end of Moharam 1425 H. During the past six months the team carried out several tasks as originally anticipated. These tasks included collection of published data relevant to this project, proper documentation of protocols, and specimen collection has been organized by establishing reliable network between the team at the Genomic Medicine unit at King Fahad Research Center and different Pediatric outpatients' clinics at Ministry of health, Jeddah. The samples will be drawn from individuals attending the Genomic Medicine unit phlebotomy area. Sample handling and labelling was carried out in the desired manner ensuring the quality of congenital samples. These cases will be discussed between the members of the study team at regular meetings, which take place at Genomic Medicine Unit at King Fahad Medical Research Center. Purchasing of essential reagents for chromosomal (part1) of the research project was received from abroad through the local companies and it took considerable amount of time; however primary congenital samples for chromosomal analysis were successfully obtained which allowed us to establish optimized protocols, validate reagents and test reliability of equipment. These protocols would provide the basis of further testing onto patient samples. The main obstacles faced by the research team were the great reduction (65%) in the allocated budget for materials, and supplies. This will have a negative impact on achieving the proposed objectives. The research team finds, therefore, that it may not be possible to perform a complete FISH analysis study (Part 2) evaluation of the congenital and mentally retarded children cases. It is hoped that the rest of the proposed fund for this year and year after could be approved; moreover the great reduction in the allocated budget could be compensated and supported for the second year of the project to enable proper and complete chromosomal analysis evaluation of all congenital cases. Finally there was interested results which has been discussed in detailed the result section .
