Abstract : Chapter 1 : Introduction The introduction depicts the reasons for choosing such subject as the art of symbols is one of the oldest methods in expressing and indicating human milestones throughout history. Hence, our ancestors resorted to symbols and depicted various activities on caves' walls prior to oral communication. Therefore, symbols are one of the oldest means that reflected human emotions, hopes, religious trends and beauty. Accordingly, as humans communicated orally to illustrate their ideas, humans also used art as a mean for communicating emotions. Thus, the power of symbols were and still a cornerstone in communication and human interaction; moreover, our ancestors have left ample artworks on cave walls including but not limited to reflecting of predators, aura and flora, hunting and hunters along with their weapons and tools used in hunting using all kinds of symbols and lines, forms and shapes. Chapter one also depicts the research problem, hypothesis, objectives, importance, limitations and terminology. Chapter 2 : Related Studies Chapter two illustrates related studies which are divided as follows: • Studies covering symbol in terms of concept and meaning. • Studies tackles the symbol throughout the ancient civilizations and sources. • Studies dealing with symbol in modern history and contemporary art trends. • General studies about the Saudi heritage and most important symbols. Chapter 3 : This chapter includes an introduction on symbol throughout the various civilizations, meaning of symbol and symbolism school, commencement and development, an analysis of a number of philosophers and thinkers, types and forms of symbols, historical milestones, the symbol role in ancient times and in Islamic art, symbolism concept and the relationship of other concepts, development of symbolism in psychology, legend and philosophy, symbols in modern history as well as an analysis for foreign and Arab symbolic artist. Chapter 4 : Chapter four is designated for analysis of symbols and engravings found on ancient Saudi artifact sites, an introduction on symbols and their importance as a mean for documentation, definition of engravings and types, important sites that contain engravings, historical presentation supported by various photos for such sites, and detailed analysis of such symbols. Chapter 5 : Chapter five reflects the researcher's personal experience in regards to this study, an explanatory introduction, objective of the experience, boundaries and limitations, experiments carried out, explanation and analysis and how to use Symbols as an empirical base in drawing and Photography. Chapter 6 : This chapter reflects the results and recommendations reached by the study in terms of theory and practice along with documentation of references in both Arabic and English, references taken through websites and a summary in both Arabic and English.
