Information retrieval systems witnessed many developments since its inception until the present time, and these developments have been a natural outgrowth of the development witnessed in related areas such as: communications, data processing, database management systems, and other systems. These systems took different forms according to the different environment in which they appeared; Under traditional libraries used indexes in their various forms,
then appeared bibliographic databases to include indexes and bibliographies in electronic form, under the Web spread search engines and directories to serve as a retrieval systems of what is available on the Web, as well as the emergence of digital libraries helped to develop retrieval systems appropriate to help the beneficiary to obtain their information needs and access to documents stored in those warehouses libraries. Perhaps the proliferation of digital libraries has led to increased interest in writing about all aspects of the topic. A lot of literature have focused on the problem of terminology and determined the concept, and appeared alongside other studies dealing with most of the elements related to digital libraries such as: standards, or copyrights, information organization in those libraries, or other topics. This study highlight the methods used to retrieve information from digital libraries,
Highlighting the experiences of some global digital libraries and the researcher was keen to include different types to identify the impact of the type of library and objectives, and their groups, and user groups on the information retrieval systems used in those libraries.
