Abstract : A simple, eco-friendly and cost-effective biosynthesis method was used for fabrication of Ag and Ag-Cu nanoparticles. In a typical one-step biosynthesis, an aqueous extract of Salvia officinalis was used as both reducing and capping/stabilizing agent. Biosynthesized Ag and Ag-Cu nanoparticles were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and thermogravimetric-thermal differential analysis (TG/DTA) techniques. Formation of stable Ag nanoparticles was identified after 10 minutes of mixing Ag nitrate and an aqueous Salvia officinalis extract, as the color of reaction mixture turned dark brown. In case of Ag-Cu nanoparticles, the reduction of metal salts was delayed due to the different reduction potentials Ag and Cu metals. The UV-vis spectra of as synthesized Ag nanoparticles samples exhibited Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) peak at 446 nm. The TEM images of synthesized samples revealed that Ag and Ag-Cu nanoparticles are spherical in shape with size around 40 nm and 50 nm respectively. A plausible mechanism for the formation of Ag and Ag-Cu nanoparticles was suggested based on obtained characterization results. The biosynthesized Ag nanoparticles were utilized for photocatalytic degradation of toxic dye Congo red (CR) under different experimental conditions. The photocatalytic activity of synthesized Ag nanoparticles for CR degradation was effective under optimum experimental conditions. The bio-fabricated Ag-Cu nanoparticles were utilized for pharmacological applications against various pathogens and observed that they very effective towards different pathogens. The phytochemical-based nanoparticle synthesis offers an effective, inexpensive, and environmentally safe alternative for the degradation of highly toxic organic compounds and harmful azo dyes.
