Abstract : The phenomenon of illegal housing started as a reaction to several factors including economic, political, demographic and natural circumstances. The presence of urban slum is not confined to poor Arab countries that suffer from high economic problems and unemployment, but these districts appear in some rich Arab countries in a less dangerous way. Saudi Arabia is one of the most civilized developing countries, however, it suffers from the problem of urban slum growth. The aim of this research is to study the demographic, social and economic characteristics of the inhabitants of Al-Taqwa district in Mecca city depending on a sample of 262 families living in Al-Taqwa district, The study revealed that the study population is characterized by a balanced economic level, low social level, and low unemployment rate, practicing marginal professions and generally, not productive. The urban slum communities is also suffers from a huge lack of environmental and health awareness. The study also concluded that Al-Taqwa district includes a large number of emigrants from outside the kingdom. The researcher also noted, through field visits, the spread of children in the streets, the lack of services, poor housing, some deviant behaviors and environmental pollution. The study recommends the adoption of : - Strategies for balanced spatial development to limit migration to Mecca City and other cities. - Development plans to reduce and rehabilitate the urban slums in Mecca city in the short and long terms. - Suitable housing options for low-income citizens to reduce the growth of the urban slums. Activation of the authorities monitoring role for implementing the building regulations and legislation to reduce the urban slums growth
