Abstract : Rhythm is a fundamental aspect of poetry and all its components and types. Therefore, it was a major theme among old literary critics who were interested in the theory and applications of poetry. The current research studies methods and mechanisms through which contemporary literary critics received the theory of rhythmic poetry in old literary criticism. The introductory section introduces the main methodological concepts and terminology used in the current research, which is based on three main topics: 1) the study and development of prosody, 2) the study of rhythm through literary critical theory, and 3) the study of rhetoric as contributing to building poetic rhythm. Each of the following sections deals with each topic. The first section discusses the transformation that occurred to poetic prosody and rhythm before, during, and after Al-Khaleel. The latter, after Al-Khaleel, is characterized by combining prosody and the suggested explanations to poetic rhythm. The second section is about criticism. It discusses poetry and its relation to rhythm, the relationship between meaning and rhythm, and the psychological aspects of rhythm. The Third section focuses on rhetoric. It discusses how Al-Badie (eloquence), textual proportionality and repetition are related to rhythm.
