Abstract : The thesis is divided into three chapters, each of them includes four sub-headings, under which I tried to discuss issues while striving to maintain the appropriate length for each issue under discussion. It is inevitable that some repetitions occur in the discussion, mainly to link ideas, however, detailed elaboration is only given in the first occurrence. This research examines the effect of sophist movement on classical and modern thought and rediscovers its main quotes and ideas embedded in philosophical schools. The significance of this study is because it connects the reality of modern western philosophy with its Greek heritage. The study makes use of several methods and approaches including descriptive, analytical and critical approaches and above all historical approach, which helps in observing and tracing the origins of sophism. The first chapter (History and Concept of Sophism) deals with the historical context in which sophism emerged in Athens and the reasons for the emergence of this movement and its characteristics. Then lexical and conceptual definitions of sophism are discussed along with the most important evolutions that occurred withintheir conception. Sophism is then compared with otherrelatedterms. The chapter concludes by discussing Socrates's relationship with the sophistsandPlato's anti-sophist attitude, its causes and consequences. The second chapter (the Features of Sophism) describes the most important features of this tendency and its characteristics. It beginswith describing the sophists'educational approach in terms of nature, purpose and content, as a product ofcertain conditions and a particularerain Athens. The sophists' theory of knowledge and its characteristics are then discussed, along withitsviewregarding the sources and its potentials anddomains. Sophists'moralphilosophy is then discussed, as well as their attitude towards values and laws, and their views regarding relativism and nihilism. The chapter concludes by stating that sophism is linked with rhetoric, but sophists differ fromtheir opponents concerning the concepts of debate and proof. The third chapter (Fate of Sophism and Attitude towards it) examines the generations of the sophists, their divisions, and their relationship with the schools of Greek doubt. Then itlistssigns andmethods of the sophist discourse by presenting some examples of their methods of deception and paralogism as well as highlighting their methods. Sophist thought and its manifestations in western thought is then discussed, with the aim of examining the effect of sophismonthe schools of "pragmatism" and "existentialism". The conclusion of the chapter, and indeed the whole thesis, discuss the rightIslamicattitude towardsthe sophist movement and dealing with it.
