Abstract : Background: Many treatment modalities exist for managing young children in need of comprehensive restorative and surgical dental treatment. General anesthesia allows treatment to be rendered under optimal conditions, however very few studies have investigated the outcomes of treatment rendered during dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia. Aim of the Study: To evaluate the failure rate of different type of restorations performed for children with special health care needs (CSHCN) treated under general anesthesia and to determine whether patient medical history affect the outcomes of restorative procedures performed under general anesthesia. Materials and Methods: The sample was selected from two public hospitals in Jeddah: King Abdulaziz University Hospital and King Fahad Hospital. The study consisted of two parts; 1) retrospective part and 2) prospective cohort part. Dental examination was performed on a dental chair using dental mirror and a probe in the out-patient dental clinic of the chosen Hospital. Recorded information included all types of treatment failures occurred in patients that were registered in especially prepared forms. Results: A total of 306 participants CSHCN (27.8%) and healthy children (72.2%) were included in this study. Stainless steel crown (SSC) was the most frequent procedure performed among healthy children whereas; extraction was the most frequent procedure performed among CSHCN. Statistically significant differences (p = 0.01) were observed in the mean number of extractions done among CSHCN 6.07±3.39 compared to that done among healthy children 4.92±3.00. Failure rates of restorations did not differ significantly in children diagnosed with medical histories when compared to children with no medical history (p = 0.70). Conclusions: SSCs are the most reliable restorations, while preventive resin restoration (PRR), pit and fissure sealants and composite strip crowns are less durable for patients treated under GA. Failure rate of restorations treated under GA are comparable among healthy patients and CSHCN.
