Abstract : The present study was conducted to evaluate the protective effect of pomegranate juice or combined with propolis extract against incidence of myocardial infarction in rats. Material and Methods: Male Wister albino rats (n=60 rats) weighing about (220-280 g) were divided into six groups; first group: negative control (n=10) fed standard diet. Group (II-VI): Rats were injected with isoproterenol (150 mg/kg, Subcutaneous (S.C)) for 3 days Group III : Rats were given pomegranate juice 1ml /rat / day. Group IV: Rats were given propolis extract (50 mg/kg BW).Group V: Rats were given pomegranate juice + propolis extract. Group VI: Rats were given glyceronitrate (2.6mg/kg.bw/day). Result: It was found that Isoproterenol induced myocardial infarction in group II (untreated rats ) as indicated by the elevation of the levels of cardiac marker enzymes in serum such as Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK) , and Cardiac troponin I ( CTNI ) were very highly significant (p<0.001) when compared with control negative group. Rats in group III and IV were treated with pomegranate juice and propolis extrate reported very highly significant (p< 0.001) improvement in an antioxidant enzymes activities when compared with untreated myocardial infarction group. Histological investigation of heart tissues of myocardial infarction rats represented the presence of sever changes, mean while treatment overcome this changes, the majority of the cells tend to be normal, this improvement in the cells may explain the Cardioprotective effect of these natural products under study especially in pomegranate juice . Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the individual administration of pomegranate juice or propolis extract possesses significant reduction in an antioxidant enzymes activity in MI diseased rats. Therefore, it was recommended to use pomegranate juice and propolis extract to alleviate the oxidative stress caused by myocardial infarction . Further research is required to find out the exact mechanisms of pomegranate juice and propolis responsible for antioxidant activities.
