The illness is characterized by catarrhal, paroxysmal, and convalescent stages. During the paroxysmal phase, cough is repetitive and episodic. Vomiting, apnea, and cyanosis are frequently associated features. Pertussis in early infancy is often atypical, life threatening, and not easily diagnosed. 2-4 The highest morbidity and mortality rates of the disease occur in infants less than 6 months of age.
